Spanish speakers to rescue!
#61
Antoni:

I've looked at the new, Spanish-based site:

http://www.takeforum.com/forum/viewforum...datakeydev

with some frequency. It seems to have the exact, same problems as the old site had, with no new threads since July 31, 2006! Obviously, there are not many Spanish-speaking-QuickBASIC people interested in trying to maintain that site. Even QBASICnews has a big problem with the competion with FreeBASIC. People ask a QuickBASIC question, and they get an answer for FB! Seems as if QB is going down the drain, rapidly. And, the Spanish site seems as if it has already disapeared.

you say that, but i really try to mind certain differences between QB and FB, when someone is showing code that is obviously QB. things like 'dim foo as integer' instead of 'dim as integer foo', 'str$' instead of 'str', etc...

i would prefer to say that the problems are the FB fanatics which try to kill the freedom of thinking.

Well, Atrapado, I will be watching, but, i don't have much faith left in the response of Spanish-speaking people o such sites. I see pretty much the same thing in Excel, for their "Other than English" site. Just one or two posts now and then, while the English one has eighty to two-hundred posts per day! I simply believe English is THE language for almost all Internet people.

Atrapado, a.k.a. Macric:

Case in point. The link you provided is the same one I use, almost daily, to go to the Spanish QuickBASIC forum that Antoni and others, including myself, have been talking about. The last post their is dated July 31, 2006! Over two months with no new posts! I believe my expressed lack of faith is justified. Sorry.

I will give it 'til the end of this month, then, I'll take it out of my Favorites list and stop visiting that site. Unless it gets busy.

By the way, Atrapado, publicity is fine as a first approach, but, without a strong and consistent posting, it will not do. Most of the best QuickBASIC people will be waiting to try to help the posters, and, they will keep on waiting. I, once before, suggested that the very folk that are moderators and knowledgeable are the main hope for such a site, as long as they, themselves, contibute frequently. They haven't...

Ralph,

There's a lot of truth in what you say, especially about moderators that should contribute.

I personally think that these Spanish QB programming forums are doomed before they start. These forums are only based on the fact that Spanish is the predominant language. The programming then takes on a minor role. After a while, posting in Spanish becomes boring, because there is not much programming essence in the posts.

It would be like a Spanish-speaking person joining a Spanish choir. If this guy can't sing, then sooner or later he'll be out of the choir, no matter how well he speaks Spanish. Get my point?

Most of the really experienced programmers that visit these Spanish forums, frequent English programming forums more often. Their participation at Spanish forums is more like "helping these guys out", and a chance to chit-chat in Spanish. Again, this may help a little, but it doesn't make for a robust forum.

One of the main things that keeps any programming forum going is posts asking for help by newbies and students. The Spanish forums are virtually lacking in this. It's mostly the same, small group of guys posting and replying to each other --- no fresh problems or ideas.

I've encounterd many posts on several forums from programmers of Spanish-speaking origin. They express themselves in English surprisingly well, and their code is, of course, universal. Then why should they recur to a Spanish-speaking forum that's dead in the water?

I happen to enjoy Japanese food. There is a Japanese restuarant nearby that prepares a vast variety of excellent dishes. However, no Japanese people work in this restaurant at all. Should I abandon this place and go looking for a genuine Japanese restaurant staffed with Japanese people? Maybe the ambience might get better, but will the food be better? By the same token, will the programming be better at a Spanish-speaking forum? Probably not.
