which video card do you have in your computer, Lachie?
I've seen S3 and SIS video cards for $1 at ebay. I think you can get one. Only 1 meg, but completely VESA compatible. QB programs will work like silk.
In my 486DX2 I have a SIS 6202. This card is great as it is very fast and supports GUI acceleration (I've seen great improvements using this card with Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, so I guess it really works). If you can get one of those (I'm sure you'll find one for $1 or $2) go for it.
