I disagree.
Objectiveness: each kind of forums have their set of advantages and disadvantages. It's a matter of each one to choose which advantages like more and which disadvantages dislike less.
I myself (lazy ass) prefer this kind of forums 'cause I hate (in threaded forums) having to click each time to see a new message and having to return back and back and back to see a new thread.

I muchly dislike tree-based forums, in favour of a phpBB-style topic-based solution. I don't like how everything is always "who replied to whom...," and you have to check the thread structure whereas with phpBB you can tell simply by checking for a "BTW Zack:" or "Zack wrote: blab blah balhh balh."

I completely agree with Zack here. I also like these fora the best (phpBB, not tree-like) because it's simple much more ordered on subject, better style, and more user friendly GUI.

I thought that this may be the general opinion, I HATE tree based forums for all the reasons mentioned so far.

Well you can have both, Vbulletin supports it currently(or modded it does). Not sure about phpBB doing it in the future.

My old SephForum 4.something supported it too. But was not as feature-filled as those popular ones.
